Department of Defence Brooch to Women of Australia A brooch was awarded to every mother of those who served in World War 1. In Catherine's case, she had 4 sons serve, hence the brooch and 3 bars. Sadly 2 sons did not survive the conflict and are buried in Commonwealth War Graves cemeteries in Belgium and France.
War Memorial (world War I) - Tallangatta Valley The war memorial to the Tallangatta Valley soldiers who lost their lives in the first world war. The monument was erected in the gardens of the Tallangatta Valley School. The names of Tom and Jim Boyce are engraved on the monument.
The memorial was dedicated on January 29, 1920. Newspaper reports of the day state that the weather lent itself to the occasion, and that the beautiful garden connected to the school was crowded with people.
