| 106 | Moorabbin News Saturday 10 June 1916 HYMENEAL M'GARRY-BOYCE A popular and exceedingly pretty wedding was celebrated at St. Joseph's R.C. church, Chelsea, on Wednesday, May 31, when Mr Wm. M'Garry, of that township, oldest son of Mr and Mrs M'Garry, of Pascoe Vale, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Alice Boyce, of Chelsea House, eldest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr J. Boyce, of Tallangatta, The cere mony was performed by the Rev. Father Fallon, assisted by the Rev. Father Bernstein. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Private G. H. Boyce (recently re turned from the front) looked charm ing, and was attired in a powder blue gabardine costume, with squir rel furs. She wore a white hat, trimmcd with fur and china roses, also a posy wristlet. The brides- maids were Miss V. Boyce, sister of the bride, and Miss Tessie Ryan, cousin. The former wore a navy costume, with white hat, and the latter a fawn gabardine costume and white hat. The best man was Mr E. Meredith, and the groomeman Mr H. M'Garry, brother of the bride groom. The "Wedding March" was played by Mrs Petersen, of Mentone. After the ceremony the bridal party and friends adjourned to Chelsea House, where the weddinig breakfast was partaken of and the usual toasts submitted and responded to. The evening was devoted to dancing and revelry and a very merry time spent by all. The happy couple left to spend the honeymoon at Daylesford. On her death index, her name is listed as Laura and not Honora - misheard perhaps. The death notice in the paper says that Honora (Laura) was 84 years old which would mean that she was born around 1799-1800, however her age on the shipping record is 38 which would mean that she was born around 1814. Her place of residence in Ireland was Bally Gurtin. Her father's name is listed as Edward Curry not Carns. She lives at John Street, Kangaroo Point. | 113 | ODONOGHUE Denis c1851-1927; son of Daniel O?Donoghue and Mary nee Carey; died at Rutherglen in 1927 aged 76 years and was interred in plot 2539-73-RC at the Carlyle Cemetery, Rutherglen on 2nd May 1927 [vrn 7557] OBITUARY MR, DENNIS O'DONOGHUE One by one the fine old pioneers of the Rutherglen district, men who built their homes in the forest, and carved out their farms by continuous hard work from the rise of the sun to its setting in the west, are gradually passing away, says "The Sun." They were not men of eight hours per day or 44 per week; they were out to establish a home and the question of hours was not thought of. Dennis O'Donoghue, of Brimin, who died early on Sunday morning, was one of these men. The deceased followed his brothers, Daniel and Patrick, to Australia and made his way to the Rutherglen district. After a short period of Colonial experience - working for settlers - he decided to make his home at Brimin. There were five brothers in the O'Donoghue family - Daniel, Patrick, Michael, Dennis and Hugh - and they were five worthy pioneer settlers, men who made their homes here and remained until the Great Master called them home, Dennis being the last to get the call. Close on 50 years ago the deceased gentleman left his native home, as his name indicates, the Emerald Isle, and became a respected citizen of this district. The deceased, after swcuring his land and providing a home, married and lived at his home- stead ever since. He was a man of genial spirit, and many a weary traveller received a welcome when calling at the home. The deceased leaves a widow, five daughers, Mary (Mrs. Goodger, Indigo), Theresa (Brimin), Margaret (Mrs. T. Reidy, Sydney), Hannah (Mrs. Darmody, Leneva), Agnes (Moss Vale, Sydney), and three sons, Dennis, John and Patrick (Brimin), to mourn their great loss. The late Mrs. Boyce, who was aged 88 years, was born at Cahir, Tipporary, Ireland, and came to Australia with her husband in 1852. This is the second time that Teddy has been wounded. He has been three years on service and his friends hope that his wound is not a severe one. - Private "Paddy" Devitt was also wounded in this big fight. This is "Paddy's" second time also. He was wounded at Pozieres about two years ago, being shot in the- heel. It was thought then that he would be invalided home, but he was patched up and returned to the firing line. "Paddy" is a cousin of Private George Boyce, of Tallangatta; whose death in action was reported last week. They are grandsons of late Mr. and Mrs. Boyce, of Wangaratta, formerly of Barnawartha. Deceased, who was much esteemed by a large circle of friends, was a resident of the Upper Indigo district for a number of years, being a daughter of the late George Boyce. She leaves a family of three sons (John, George and Daniel) and one daughter, Miss Margaret. | 138 | The Federal Standard, Chiltern, Friday, August 5, 1949 - WEDDING - DEVITT-OATES The marriage was celebrated at the Methodist Church, Chiltern, on June 25, of Beryl M, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs G F Oates of Barnawartha, and Patrick M, only son of Mr and Mrs W Devitt, Barnawartha South. Rev J Wright performed the ceremony and the bride was given away by her father. She wore a gown of off-white moss cloque, featuring a gathering bodice with a heart neck, beaded at the shoulders in silver and long pointed sleeves; a peplum was also beaded to match and the skirt fell to a pointed train. The tulle veil, loaned by Mrs S Oates, was held by a halo of orange blossom, and a shower bouquet of stocks, carnations and hyacinths carried. Her sister, Miss Ethel Oates, was bridesmaid. She wore a rose pink crepe frock with circular skirt. Her blue veil was held with a floral head-dress and she carried a bouquet of pink carnations, violets and heath. She also wore the bridegroom?s gift, a gold brooch with a blue stone. Mr W Welladsen was best man, and Mrs I B Hicks was organist. Mesdames Oates and Devitt received the guests at Smythe?s Telegraph Hotel, the former wearing a navy coat and accessories, with her pink frock, and a spray of pink carnations. Mrs Devitt chose a black coat and accessories to wear with her green frock, and a spray of red azaleas. Rev Wright presided at the breakfast, where the cake, made by the bride?s mother, was cut. The bridegroom?s gift to the bride was a double string of pearls and the bride?s gift to the bridegroom was a travelling rug. Leaving for a honeymoon tour, the bride wore a lime green jacket suit with gold buttons, tan alpaca overcoat and brown accessories. | 139 | The Federal Standard, Chiltern, Friday, January 28, 1927 p2 c5 - OBITUARY - MR DANIEL O’DONOGHUE On Wednesday morning of last week at Rutherglen Daniel O?Donoghue of Brown?s Plains died at the age of 83 years. The deceased was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and when quite a lad made up his mind to try his fortune in Australia. He landed in Melbourne, then went to the Woolshed, and afterwards to the Brown?s Plains district. Not being enamoured with gold digging he turned his attention to the land and selected on the site of his present holding, over 55 years ago. He married a Miss Boyce of Barnawartha, and the young couple set about making a comfortable home, and they made many friends about the district during their long period of the land. His wife predeceased him about three years ago. The late D. O?Donoghue had been ailing for the last two years and about two months ago entered Nurse McEvey?s private hospital, where death took place. He leaves three sons - George, John and Daniel - and one daughter - Margaret (Mrs C Gill) - to mourn their sad loss. | 140 | The Federal Standard, Chiltern, Friday, October 18, 1918 p2 c2 An interesting double wedding was celebrated at Boweya, near Wangaratta, on Tuesday, when Miss Evelyn Welsh, third daughter of Mr E J Welsh, was married to Mr Roderick Langdon, only son of Mr W H Langdon, Wahgunyah, and Miss Catherine Welsh, second daughter of Mr Welsh, was married to Mr William Devitt, eldest son of the late Mr P Devitt, Upper Indigo, Barnawartha. The brides were given away by their father. In the former wedding Miss M Langdon was bridesmaid, and in the latter Miss Maud Langdon acted in a similar capacity. Mr R Welsh was best man in each instance. The ceremonies were performed by Rev Mr Clemons, Benalla, assisted by Rev Mr Perkins. Wedding breakfast was served at the residence of the parents. Clonmel, Friday. Miss Katie McCarthy, daughter of Mr. Patrick McCarthy, farmer, Ballygurtin, midway between Cahir and Bansha, has written home to her father, stating that she was the second to last to leave the Titanic on the night of the memorable tragedy. It will be remembered that Miss McCarthy left home in company with Miss Katie Connolly, of Tipperary ; Miss Katie Peters, Ballydrohid, and Mr. Roger Tobin, Ballycamon, the latter three being near neighbours of hers. Miss McCarthy's letter, which is written from New Jersey, where she is now with her sister, is as follows:- “About twelve o'clock on Sunday night Roger Tobin called us to get up, but told us not to be frightened, as there was no danger. To make sure, however, of our safety, he told us to get lifebelts. There were three of us in the room-Katie Peters, Katie Connolly, and myself. When Roger Tobin called us I wanted them to come up on deck, but they would not come. They appeared to think that there was no danger. That was the last I saw of them. I then left the room, and on going out I met a man from Dungarvan, who took me up to the second class boat deck, where they were putting out the boats. I was put into one boat, but was taken out of it again as it was too full. I was in the last boat to leave the ship, and was the second last person put into it. This was a short time before the ship went down. We were only just out of the way when the ship split in two and sank. We remained in the boat all night until near eight o'clock next morning, when we were rescued by the Carpathia. Our boat was so full I thought it would go down every moment, and one of the boats capsized when we were leaving the sinking ship. I did not, however, feel at all frightened, and did not fully realize the danger and the full nature of the awful tragedy until I was safe on board the Carpathia. When we were put on board the Carpathia we were immediately given restoratives and put to bed. I slept for an hour and then got up, feeling all right.
