The Federal Standard, Saturday, October 9, 1880 p2 c7 - NEWS AND NOTES
A sad accident, which unfortunately terminated fatally, happened to Thomas Boyce, son of Mr Boyce, farmer, Upper Indigo. It appears he was out riding with an elder brother in one of the paddocks, when he had occasion to dismount, and when attempting to remount and had had just got his foot in the stirrup, his horse started off, dragging him some distance, when he was brought in contact with a sharp piece of timber, inflicting a frightful wound in the groin and thigh. He lay about twenty minutes before his brother found him, during which time he had been bleeding profusely. He was quickly conveyed home, and Dr Haley was immediately sent for, on his arrival he was almost pulseless, and sank within half an hour from loss of blood and shock to the nervous system. | Boyce, Thomas (I9)

DEATH AFTER QUARREL.
USE 0F ADZE ALLEGED. Charge of Manslaughter.
KERANG, Tuesday - An inquest was held today concerning the death of William Henry Gilham, , who died from injuries on July 11. Superintendent Black appeared for the police. Mr. Myles 0'Brien for Robert Charles Colville, and Mr. Tre- bilcock for Mrs Gilham.
Constable Mann said that Colville had missed some tools from the Pyramid Creek bridge punt, and he suspected Gilham, and swore an information against him. A search warrant was taken out on July 4, when Gilham's house was searched, but nothing was found.
Albert Hayman labourer, employed by Colville, give evidence that on July 11 he was working on the Pyramid Creek bridge with Bert Casey. Colville was working on the other end of the bridge. Gilham pulled up in a motorcar, and walked back towards Colville. He said he would make Colville apologise to him or he would throw him in the river. Later witness saw Colville and Gilham struggle. Colville had a saw. Colville seemed to be hitting Gilham on the head with the saw. Casey separated the men. Gilham walked to the other end of the bridge and laid or fell down. Gilham had blood over his face. Gilham said, "I am done; he settled me with an adze."
Dr. Nankivell gave evidence as to the injuries and said that in his opinion death was due to one injury which caused laceration of the brain and hemorrhage. The edge of the adze would cause a fracture of the skull. A saw would cause a cut on the head, not a fracture. That would be caused by something blunt. There were two wounds on the head, one on each side. One might have been caused by striking a beam, but not the other. Tho injuries on the right side of the head might have been caused by striking a beam. There was a fracture on the left side of the head.
John Thomas Walsh give evidence as to Gilham saying. ' He has knocked my brains out.
Senior Constable Fisher gave evidence as to Colville on July 11 stating that he wished to give Gilham in charge for having attempted to murder him with an adze. He went to Gilham's house and asked him what was the matter. Gilham said Colville had cracked him.
E. Blyth Keats said that he saw Gilham about on July 11. Gilham was drunk, and said he was going to "do Colville in,"
J. S. Armstrong said that Gilham had told him that he resented having his house searched and that the next time he met Colville he would kill him.
The coroner (Mr. Cook, P. M. ) found that William H. Gilham died from injuries in- flicted with an adze by Robert Charles Colville on July 11. He found Colville guilty of manslaughter and ordered that he should appear at the Bendigo Supreme
Court on August 2. Bail was fixed in one surety of £250 and accused himself in a like amount.

OBITUARY
General regret was expressed throughout the Barnawartha and Chiltern districts on Thursday of last week when it was learned that a popular resident of the Upper Indigo, in the person of Mr Michael Francis Devitt had died that day at his brother?s (William?s) home. In his youthful days he had an attack of rheumatic fever, the effects from which he never properly recovered. He enjoyed apparently fairly good health until a few moments before his death when he succumbed (suddenly) to heart failure. He was a son of the late Patrick and Mary Devitt, aged 40 years, and was born at Upper Indigo. He was unmarried. He is survived by three sisters, Margaret (Mrs E Elligate, Wodonga), Mary (Mrs T Durkin, Malvern), and Martha (Mrs P O?Brien, Sunshine) and five brothers, William, James, John, George and Daniel. The bridesmaids carried bouquets of pink carnations, gladioli and blue delphiniums, with their frocks of dusty pink satin-back crepe, which were trimmed with silver sequins. They wore mittens to match their tulle shoulder-length veils, which were held with topknots which matched their bouquets. They also wore aquamarine pendants, gifts of the bridegroom. The bridegroom had his brother, Mr Edwin Fisher, as best man, and the bride?s brother, Mr Patrick Devitt, as groomsman. During the signing of the register, Miss Joan Griffin of Melbourne, sang a solo, and Mr Fisher, father of the bridegroom, was organist. Mrs Devitt and Mrs Fisher received the 80 guests at the Soldier?s Memorial Hall, Barnawartha, where the Rev Smith-Gray presided at the breakfast. Mrs Devitt wore a frock of black satin-back crepe, trimmed with moonshine bugle beads; her shoulder spray was of red gladioli. Mrs Fisher?s frock was of …..ral grafton, (?floral chiffon) and she wore a shoulder posy of tiger lilies. The bridegroom?s gift to the bride was a travelling case; the bride?s gift to the groom was a travelling rug. When leaving for Sydney, where the honeymoon is being spent, the bride wore a smart grey tailored suit with navy cloque and navy accessories. The three tiered cake was made by the bride?s sister. Many gifts and cheques were received and 50 telegrams were read. Mr and Mrs A S Fisher will reside at “Burrabunnia”, Barnawartha. FISHER Allan Sherwood 1923-2004; son of Thomas Edwin Fisher and Eliza Dress nee Fisher; born at Chiltern 11th February 1923; raised at “Fernbank” on the Indigo Creek at Brown?s Plains and educated at the Brown?s Plains school where he obtained his Merit Certificate. After completing his education he worked on the family farms for several years. In the 1940?s Allan and his brothers, Edwin and Harold, share-farmed surrounding properties at Brown?s Plains and North Barnawartha using their team of 25 draught horses. In 1945 Allan purchased the Brown?s Plains property “Burrabunnia”.
As well as the farm Allan?s other interests included the Barnawartha volunteer Fire Brigade - receiving his 45 year service badge in 1999. He was also a founding member of the Wodonga Technical College School Council. In 1984 Allan and Nance were presented with a set of Lawn bowls each from their sons and they became enthusiastic members of the Chiltern Bowling Club. Nance was also a keen golfer for some years and they both enjoyed their annual holiday to Urunga in NSW. All Soul?s Church was a very important part of family life and they rarely missed a service. Allan was Church Warden and treasurer of the vestry for 50 years. Other than breaking an arm - once in the army and twice while working on the farm - Allan enjoyed excellent health until the mid 90?s when he had a heart attack. He was fitted with a pacemaker and, riding a 4-wheel motor bike with trailer attached, was able to continue an active interest in the farm. Allan spent a short period in the Wodonga and Melbourne Private hospitals and passed away at the Chiltern Bush Nursing Hospital on 30th August 2004. He was buried in the Barnawartha cemetery after a service at All Soul?s Church of England. | Fisher, Allan Sherwood (I247)
